Crisp acidity and rich minerals

Within Marlborough, the Wairau Valley is arguably the sub-region best suited to producing the "quintessential New Zealand Sauvignon taste."

In the vast Wairau region, the mainstream style is to blend grapes from multiple vineyards to achieve a balanced wine, but this wine deliberately sticks to being from a single vineyard .

This wine is made only from a select plot of land, without mixing with wines from other vineyards, and can be said to be a brand that clearly reflects the winery's ideal direction.

Wine making

Among the winery's own vineyards, which have been in operation since the 1980s, the winery carefully selects only the finest plots of grapes. Crafted using grapes from a single vineyard, without relying on blending, the wine inevitably boasts a high concentration of fruit.

The winemaker's main focus in brewing is stainless steel fermentation to maintain freshness, but also ferments and ages part of the wine in old French oak barrels . This creates a complex, three-dimensional flavor and depth, as well as a smooth texture, that sets this wine apart from simply being a fruity Sauvignon Blanc.

It is also vegan-friendly as it does not use egg whites or other ingredients to reduce sediment.

Tasting Comments

The color is light, and the moment you pour it, the bursting citrus aroma of lime and grapefruit rises from the glass.

When you put it in your mouth, the dense fruit flavor spreads all at once.

And deep within is a subtle thickness from the casks, giving the flavor a "heavy feeling." And what's particularly noteworthy is the "solid minerality" that lingers in the aftertaste. There are nuances of flint-like smokiness and sea breeze, which beautifully tighten the finish.

Pairing suggestions

To complement this wine's "remarkable refreshing taste" and "solid structure," we recommend pairing it with the following dishes.

  • Fresh spring rolls and coriander salad: The concentrated fruit flavor perfectly complements the strong flavor of the herbs.
  • White fish carpaccio (with lemon): The clear acidity and minerality bring out the freshness of the fish and create a beautiful aftertaste.
  • Wild vegetable tempura (with salt): The powerful flavor from the single vineyard blends beautifully with the bitter taste unique to wild vegetables.

"Rather than blending, we compete with the complexity of a single vineyard and barrel." This Sauvignon Blanc embodies the confidence of Isabel Estate. We recommend it to those who want a deeper, more intense experience of the classic Marlborough.

About the Winery "Isabel Estate Vineyard"

Isabel Estate is a winery located in the Wairau Valley in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. The cool climate, with long hours of sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night, cultivates grapes with excellent acidity and aroma. The well-drained gravelly soil mixed with clay provides the ideal environment for producing wines with concentrated fruit and complexity.

Background of the company's founding

Isabel Estate began in 1980. Founder Mike Tiller, a former pilot, spotted this land from the air while flying. Attracted by the ideal topography and climate, he and his wife Robin began growing grapes. The winery was named after Mike's mother, Isabel. In 1994, they released their first vintage under their own brand, marking the start of their journey as a quality-focused winery.

Winemaking philosophy

Isabel Estate's motto is "wine that reflects the vineyard," and they are committed to growing and vinifying grapes 100% from their own vineyards. High-density plantings, rare even in Marlborough, and limited yields allow for concentrated fruit flavors, supported by delicate vinification using natural yeasts and French oak. Isabel's style is to bring out the unique characteristics of the land and varietals without unnecessary intervention.

People and Teams

Currently, winemaking is led by Marlborough-born winemaker Jeremy Mackenzie, who has experience working at renowned wineries overseas and is committed to creating wines that reflect the local terroir. His Chardonnay has been highly praised both in New Zealand and abroad, and in recent years he has been awarded the country's Winemaker of the Year award.

Quietly but surely, a skill that is highly acclaimed

Isabel Estate's wines are not flashy, but rather captivate drinkers with their depth of flavor and refined structure. Their Chardonnay in particular has won top awards at national awards in multiple vintages, and they are recognized as one of Marlborough's leading wineries with a quiet presence and solid ability.

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and produces over 80% of New Zealand's wine.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, boasts an overwhelming production volume and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In red wine, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular.
