Aromas of Fruit and Spice

Isabel Estate is a rare producer in Marlborough that uses only its own grapes from its own vineyards, with no purchased grapes.

Their vineyards are located in the Wairau Valley, the heart of the Marlborough wine region. This area boasts long hours of sunshine, cool autumns, and well-drained gravelly soils, creating ideal conditions for viticulture.

Looking closely at Isabel's vineyards among the many wineries spread across the vast land, one notices a distinct difference.

That difference is the planting density. The vines are grown at roughly twice the standard density for Marlborough. This encourages the roots to compete, naturally making the fruit smaller and more concentrated, leading to complex flavors.

The vineyards are BioGro certified and recognized by Sustainable Winegrowing NZ.

About the Winemaking

They use Pinot Noir from their own vineyards, with vines over 30 years old.

By fermenting 10% of the grapes as whole clusters, they add herbal and spicy aromas to the fruit's core.

It is aged in French oak barrels, 30% new and 70% second-fill. The oak flavor plays a supporting role, allowing the fruit's character to shine through.

The winemaker is Jeremy McKenzie. He has built his career in Marlborough, Europe, and around the world, and has been in charge of winemaking at Isabel Estate since 2014. He is one of Marlborough's leading winemakers, having won the national best winemaker award.

Tasting Notes

The color is a bright ruby red.

As you swirl the glass, red fruits like pomegranate and plum emerge. From deeper within, there's a refreshing hint of cedar and a bittersweet nuance of licorice. Then, herbal and spicy aromas gently tickle the nose.

On the palate, a concentrated fruitiness expands. This is the density characteristic of small berries, cultivated through high-density planting. The tannins are silky and fine, and the acidity is supple. The sweetness of the fruit and the complexity of the spices coexist harmoniously.

About Aging

It is just reaching its optimal drinking age. Opening it now will allow you to enjoy the most vibrant aromas of fruit and spice.

And if you cellar it for another 3-5 years, the fruitiness will settle further, developing into a more complex and cohesive flavor.

Pairing

We want to build dishes that leverage the spiciness in the wine.

  • Sansho-grilled Chicken (The pungent aroma of sansho peppers resonates with the wine's spiciness)
  • Pork Ginger (The flavor of ginger and the fruitiness of Pinot Noir are an excellent match)
  • Beef and Burdock Simmered in Soy Sauce (The umami of soy sauce and sugar enhances the wine's complexity)
  • Mushroom Risotto (The earthy mushroom flavor overlaps with the wine's aroma)
  • Herb-crusted Tuna (The herbal aroma beautifully harmonizes with the wine's spiciness)
  • About the Winery: Isabel Estate Vineyards

Isabel Estate is a winery located in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough, on New Zealand's South Island. The long hours of sunshine and the significant diurnal temperature variation in this cool climate nurture grapes with excellent acidity and aroma. The well-drained, gravelly soil mixed with clay in this area creates an ideal environment for wines with both concentrated fruit and complexity.

    Founding History

Isabel Estate began in 1980. Founder Mike Tiller, a former pilot, discovered the land from above during a flight. Attracted by the ideal topography and climate, he started cultivating grapes with his wife, Robyn. The winery was named after Mike's mother, Isabel. In 1994, they released their first vintage under their own brand, embarking on a serious journey as a quality-focused winery.

    Winemaking Philosophy

Isabel Estate adheres to the principle of "wines that reflect the vineyard," committing to grape cultivation and winemaking exclusively from their own vineyards. Rare in Marlborough, high-density planting and yield restriction concentrate the fruit flavors, supported by delicate winemaking utilizing natural yeasts and French oak. Isabel's style is characterized by minimal intervention, bringing out the individuality of the land and the varietal.

    People and Team

Currently, the winemaking is led by Marlborough-born winemaker Jeremy McKenzie. Leveraging his experience at renowned overseas wineries, he is dedicated to crafting wines that express the local terroir. His Chardonnays are highly acclaimed both in New Zealand and internationally, and he has recently been awarded the country's best winemaker award.

    Quietly, Yet Surely, Recognized Prowess

Isabel Estate wines captivate drinkers not with flashy impact, but with depth of flavor and elegant structure. Among them, their Chardonnay has won top awards in national competitions for multiple vintages, establishing Isabel Estate as one of Marlborough's leading wineries with a quiet presence and undeniable quality.

    About the Marlborough Region

"Marlborough" is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

It boasts abundant sunshine and significant diurnal temperature variations, creating favorable natural conditions for grape growth. More than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced in Marlborough.

Among these, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by crisp acidity and abundant fruit, accounts for an overwhelming production volume and is widely loved worldwide as a unique character. For red wines, Pinot Noir, with its attractive rich berry fruit flavors, is popular.
