This "Chilled Red" is the perfect summer bottle, crafted by Japanese winemaker Kohei Koyama, who is making waves in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand's North Island.

The Growing Potential of Chilled Red in New Zealand

In fact, this style has been gaining attention in New Zealand in recent years. Seizing on its potential, Koyama used his own philosophy and expertise to perfect his original Chilled Red.

The grapes are sourced from estate vineyards in the Gladstone district of Wairarapa. Cabernet Franc and Merlot are harvested at peak ripeness, with gentle extraction and aging in stainless steel tanks to bring out soft tannins and natural fruit flavors.

About the Winery: "Green Songs"

"Green Songs" is a winery run by Japanese winemaker Kohei Koyama.

After a successful business career in Tokyo and London, Kohei set his sights on winemaking and moved to New Zealand in 2011.

He studied viticulture and enology at Lincoln University, graduating at the top of his class—the first Japanese person to do so. He then gained hands-on experience in New Zealand and California before partnering with Atamai Village in the Nelson region in 2014 to establish his own winery.

Atamai Village is a community where orchards and farms are managed collectively, with a shared goal of living with the lowest possible impact on the Earth's environment.

Kohei is also the head of viticulture and winemaking at "URLAR," a winery in Gladstone, Wairarapa, owned by Yoichiro Nishi, the 8th generation head of Nishi Shuzo in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Now based primarily in Gladstone, Kohei is expanding the Green Songs lineup and broadening his scope of winemaking. We look forward to his future endeavors.

About the Region: Wairarapa

"Wairarapa" is located in the southeastern part of New Zealand's North Island. Popular as a resort area, it is easily accessible, being just about an hour's drive from the capital, Wellington.

The sub-region of "Martinborough" within this area shares similar climate and soil conditions with Burgundy, France, and is known as one of the world's top-class Pinot Noir production regions.
