Orange Wine by a Japanese Winemaker

This is a 100% organic orange wine crafted by Kohei Koyama, a Japanese winemaker based in New Zealand.

Made from white Pinot Gris grapes, it undergoes 20 days of fermentation with its skins and seeds (skin contact), just like a red wine. It then goes through malolactic fermentation and is aged for 3 months in used French oak barrels.

This vintage (2021) features rich nuances of ripe apricot. The bouquet is calm and restrained, while on the palate, it leaves a lasting impression with a soft, elegant hint of caramel.

Though bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is remarkably clean. As it breathes, the savory notes of the lees expand, adding depth to the flavor.

The tannins are mild and smooth, providing structure and a lingering, attractive finish.

About the Winery: "Green Songs"

"Green Songs" is a winery operated by Japanese winemaker Kohei Koyama.

After a successful business career in Tokyo and London, Koyama moved to New Zealand in 2011 to pursue winemaking.

He studied viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University, graduating at the top of his class—the first Japanese person to do so. He gained practical experience in New Zealand and California, and in 2014, he partnered with Atamai Village in the Nelson region to establish his own winery.

Atamai Village is a community where orchards and farms are collectively operated with the shared goal of living in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

Koyama is also the head of viticulture and winemaking at "URLAR," a winery located in Gladstone in the Wairarapa region, owned by Yoichiro Nishi, the 8th generation head of Nishi Sake Brewery in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Now based primarily in Gladstone, Koyama continues to expand the Green Songs lineup and broaden his craft. We look forward to seeing what he achieves next.

The sub-region of "Martinborough" within this area shares similar climate and soil conditions with Burgundy, France, and is recognized as one of the world's top Pinot Noir producing regions.
