A beautiful and refreshing orange wine

Orange wine has become more common recently.

Here's a quick rundown of what it's like (please skip if you already know):

"Orange wine is made using white wine grape varieties, but it's made a little differently than regular white wine.

White wine is usually made by fermenting only the grape juice, but orange wine is made by fermenting the grape skins and seeds as well, just like red wine.

This gives the wine its unique flavor, color, and slight astringency.

The result is an orange or amber-colored wine that is more complex than a typical white wine and can sometimes have hints of tea, spice or nuts."

Simply put, orange wine is something between white wine and red wine (though it doesn't contain any oranges, of course!).

Originally, Georgia in Eastern Europe and Friuli in Italy were well known as producing regions of orange wine, but now it is produced all over the world.

And in New Zealand, although the number is still small, some producers are beginning to try their hand at orange wine.

Now, this wine is a new one that just arrived in Japan in 2024.

The grape varieties used are 90% Pinot Gris and 10% Gewurztraminer.

The color is a slight amber orange.

The aroma is mild, with notes of apricot and apple from the Pinot Gris, as well as a hint of spice .

The taste is mild . The acidity is mild . The fruitiness is strong , and the taste is not harsh at all. If you drink it chilled, you can feel the nuance of bitter fruit skin , but if you drink it at room temperature, the taste becomes softer and it becomes easy to drink.

As mentioned above, the tea and nutty notes that are sometimes found in orange wines are subdued, resulting in a flavor that is mainly fruit with a hint of spice .

The plant is grown in Hawke's Bay on New Zealand's North Island, a relatively warm region.

The vineyards are located on the flat Fern Hills near the Narolo River, which runs through the heart of the region, and the Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer grown here are mechanically harvested at dawn.

The grapes are aged separately by variety, and both are fermented in open tanks for 5 days in contact with the skins.

After fermentation, the wine is left on its lees for 60 days, then blended with the two varieties, naturally cleared, filtered and bottled (meaning the wine is not cloudy).

The residual sugar is adjusted to 5.2g/L, a value that makes it easy to sense the fruitiness.

This Glow Orange on Skin can be paired with a wide range of foods.

  • Soy sauce-based Japanese cuisine
  • Chinese cuisine in general
  • Spicy ethnic cuisine

I think they can be suited to a wide range of meals, as they can be roughly categorized like this.

When pairing with meat or spicy food, raise the temperature a little to bring out the bitterness. For other pairings, it is best to drink at around 15-20°C.

About Hawke's Bay

Hawke's Bay is located in the eastern part of the North Island and is characterized by abundant sunshine and a relatively warm climate, and boasts the second largest grape-growing area in Australia.

Hawke's Bay specializes in producing red wines, particularly those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, while fruity Chardonnay is a popular white wine.

The Gimlet Gravels, an area created when what was originally a riverbed was pushed up by an earthquake, is one of Hawke's Bay's important sub-regions.
