Fruity Otago Pino

We would like to introduce you to the Pinot Noir from Gibbston Valley Winery, which has been arriving at Boxmo Wines in succession since the beginning of this year, and which is arguably the winery's true essence.

Central Otago is known as the coldest wine-producing region in New Zealand, even though the country has a cool climate. In the past, it was said that the climate was too harsh for growing grapes.

However, since the 1980s, a group of venturesomers have begun planting Pinot Noir here, and have produced wines of excellent quality, and the area has quickly become one of New Zealand's leading producers of premium wines.

Gibbston Valley is one of those challengers.

The white wines are also highly refined, but the favorite is still Pinot Noir.

Now, Central Otago is known as one of the three major Pinot Noir producing regions in the world (the other two being Burgundy and Oregon), and is an area that produces wines that impress Pinot fans around the world. If you like Pinot, Otago Pinot is a must-drink.

Gibbston's GV collection is a harmonious blend of grapes from several vineyards.

This 2022 vintage is made from grapes from one vineyard in Pisa and three vineyards in Bendigo.

The hand-picked grapes are fermented in separate tanks, with 10% of the grapes undergoing whole-cluster fermentation.

The wine is then aged for 10 months in French oak barrels (15% new) before being bottled.

The aroma is strong with raspberry notes, as well as floral aromas such as rose.

When you put it in your mouth, the energetic fruitiness spreads. You can clearly feel the flavor of blackberries and American cherries. The aroma and spice from the barrel and whole-cluster fermentation give the taste a three-dimensional flavor.

Good dishes to pair with it include coq au vin (chicken stewed in red wine), sauteed pork in red wine sauce, and lamb steak.

For Japanese food, miso-grilled chicken and stewed beef and burdock are good choices.

Chevre (goat cheese) such as Pouligny Saint-Pierre also goes well with this dish.

About the winery "Gibston Valley Winery"

gibbstonvalley_logo

Gibbston Valley Winery In 1980, when everyone thought that this region was too cold for growing grapes, we boldly began our challenge to make wine.

This photo shows the Gibbston Valley, which the winery is named after and which stretches from east to west in Central Otago. You can clearly see that the valley was formed by erosion caused by river water.

The wind blows through the valley, making the climate here quite cool.

Central Otago, the region in which Gibbston Valley is located, is now dotted with world-acclaimed wineries such as Felton Road and Prophets Rock, but the winery that was the first to recognise the potential of this region and play a pioneering role was Gibbston Valley Winery.

Within a few years of being established, they were producing outstanding wines, both red and white, and had brought recognition to the previously unexplored Central Otago as a wine-producing region.

As pioneers in the region, they have experience in cultivating and brewing a variety of grape varieties, and every year they produce high-quality wines that take advantage of the cool climate, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc.

By the way, Gibbston Valley is easily accessible from Queenstown, so many people visit to tour the wineries.

New Zealand's largest wine cave is a spectacular sight.

The restaurants and cheese shops are also well-regarded, and you can enjoy pairings with rare wines that are not exported to Japan.

For those who want to relax, we recommend the attached lodge, which is fully equipped with a spa, sauna, theater room, and more. You'll be able to spend an extremely luxurious time there.

About Central Otago

Central Otago, the southernmost region in the country, is known as a famous Pinot Noir producing area and is called one of the "three major Pinot Noir producing areas in the world" along with Burgundy and Oregon.

In addition to Pinot Noir, we are focusing on growing aromatic white grapes. This region is the only one of New Zealand's wine producing regions with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large daily temperature differences, coolness, and extreme dryness.

The region is also home to a wealth of small wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
