High-quality spiced Syrah

"I'm happy to be able to deliver a Syrah of this flavor at this price!"

That's what I think most about this wine. We are able to offer this high-grade Syrah for less than 5,000 yen (tax included) because we are an exclusive importer.

This Syrah is not just any Syrah. It is made from grapes from a special plot called Gimlet Gravels in Hawke's Bay, one of New Zealand's most famous wine-producing regions.

The Gimlet Gravels, a former riverbed with unique, stony, and poor soil, is highly regarded by wine enthusiasts worldwide as an ideal location for growing Syrah and Bordeaux varieties.

Naturally, due to its reliable quality, wines from Gimlet Gravels are becoming increasingly expensive, but this time we at Boxmo Wine were able to purchase the Gard & Morris Reserve Hawke's Bay Syrah 2019, which uses grapes from Gimlet Gravels. The suggested retail price is 4,675 yen including tax.

However, this price is expected to rise in the future. It is likely that this price will only apply to the current purchase lot, so please check it out as soon as possible.

The taste combines the depth of black fruits with nuances of spice and earth, and the clarity that is unique to cool-climate regions.

It's packed with the charm of an elegant, cool Syrah that offers depth and a lingering finish rather than richness!

Cultivation and brewing

The grapes are hand-harvested from two vineyards in the Gimlet Gravels region, where shallow silt soil is underlain by deep gravel, providing excellent drainage.

The yield was a little low at 3-4 tons per acre. In 2019, dry and warm weather in March and April resulted in small, concentrated fruits. This year, the winery says they were able to harvest a Syrah that they call "the best ever."

The harvested grapes were gently destemmed and crushed before fermentation in small open tanks. After a week of cold soaking, fermentation using natural yeasts began. During fermentation, manual punching and pumping were performed, and the wine was aged with the skins for 3 to 4 weeks.

The wine is then drained by gravity and the skins gently pressed. It is then aged for approximately 12 months in 225L French oak barrels (20% new), where malolactic fermentation softens the acidity and adds complexity.

After a light egg white clarification, the wine is bottled unfiltered, following a consistent French-style process.

Tasting

The aroma is of blackberry, raspberry, and dark cherry, accented with smoky game, black pepper, dried herbs, and bay leaf. There is also a floral scent typical of a cool climate.

The palate is powerful yet elegant. The richness of black fruits is layered with nuances of spice and earth, and the finish is long and deep. The concentrated fruit and spicy elements are beautifully blended, allowing you to enjoy the charm of a clear, cool Syrah.

Pairing

It is recommended to drink it at 16-18°C.

  • Grilled steak or lamb chops
  • Spicy duck dish
  • Roasted venison
  • For Japanese cuisine, try stewed beef tendon or yakitori (thigh and negima) with Japanese pepper.

It pairs perfectly with red meat and spicy dishes. Its light style makes it easy to pair with a wide range of meat dishes.

Customer testimonials

  • "I absolutely love this Syrah! It's fruity but also has a great body."
  • "It's not too heavy, which is nice."
  • "It had a nice spice to it and went really well with the meat."
  • "I love the unique sweet and spicy scent."

This Gard & Morris Reserve Hawke's Bay Syrah is typical of Gimlet Gravels , combining power and clarity . Enjoy the lingering finish and depth!

About the Winery "Garde & Morris"

Ben Morris and Frida Gard are a family-run boutique winery with a unique dual winemaking structure in both New Zealand and Sweden. Their handcrafted wines are highly acclaimed in Sweden's finest restaurants and state-run wineries.

Founding background and history

Winemaker Ben Morris was born in New Zealand and studied organic winemaking at Lincoln University. After graduating, he gained experience as a "flying winemaker" in France and California, before moving to Sweden with his wife Frida in 2006 to launch his own brand.

Frida, a native of Sweden, leads sales and distribution in the Swedish market, and the winery's name, Gard, comes from her surname, reflecting their partnership.

Cultivation and winemaking policy

In terms of cultivation, we partner with small, excellent grape growers across New Zealand and grow grapes using a natural approach that minimizes the use of pesticides and chemicals.

In brewing, we aim to make natural wines with minimal human intervention in order to bring out the unique characteristics of the terroir and grape varieties to the fullest.

Sustainability and Cultural Context

Environmental considerations and sustainable production are key principles at Gard & Morris.

By cultivating in accordance with organic farming methods and thoroughly eliminating unnecessary additives in brewing, we produce high-quality wine while reducing our environmental impact.

This winery, run by Ben from New Zealand and Frida from Sweden, truly serves as a bridge between the two countries.

This wine, which combines the best of both cultures, pairs beautifully with Swedish cuisine and is highly acclaimed by local restaurants.

About Hawke's Bay

Hawke's Bay is located in the eastern part of the North Island and is a region characterized by abundant sunshine and a relatively warm climate, boasting the second largest grape-growing area in Australia.

Hawke's Bay specializes in producing red wines, particularly those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, while the fruity Chardonnay is a popular white wine.

Additionally, the Gimlet Gravels area, which was created when an earthquake pushed up what was originally a riverbed, is one of Hawke's Bay's most important subregions.
