The world's No. 1 Sauvignon Blanc!

Have you ever heard of the name "Wine Spectator" ?

Wine Spectator is the name of a magazine. It is a long-running wine magazine that was first published in the United States in 1976.

Among these, the "Top 100 of the Year" is a project that attracts attention every year, selecting the top 100 wines of the year from over 10,000 bottles.

Wines that rank highly attract a lot of attention from the wine industry and can be inundated with orders from supermarkets and restaurants around the world.

One of New Zealand's leading wines has made a big leap in the 2024 Top 100: the 2023 vintage.

It was ranked 11th in the annual rankings.

It was the top New Zealand wine and the highest-ranked Sauvignon Blanc, and also achieved the impressive feat of coming in second overall for white wines, behind only California Chardonnay, which came in 10th place.

Many wine enthusiasts think of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc as something to drink casually in the summer. However, simple, fruit-based wines cannot make it to the top of this ranking. Wines of the quality required are those that are served in high-end restaurants around the world.

This wine was selected from among these, and it can be said that it has been recognized by wine professionals as "the world's best Sauvignon Blanc." What is particularly noteworthy is that it was a wine from Martinborough, a small, cool-climate region in New Zealand, that was highly praised, rather than Marlborough, a major wine-producing region in New Zealand. This is a remarkable achievement that overturns the image that Sauvignon Blanc = Marlborough is the sole domain.

...Well, I've talked at length about the rankings, but the most important thing is the taste.

Now, let's move on to the review.

The color is very pale , almost transparent.

The aroma is subdued, lacking the fruitiness of Marlborough . It has a gentle fragrance that sets it apart from the typical flashy New Zealand wines. The aroma of white flowers is complemented by hints of herbs .

In the mouth, the fruity notes hidden in the aroma emerge clearly . The pleasant acidity and freshness of lime and passion fruit stand out. The overall taste is well-balanced and has a very clear finish.

According to David Peabody Jr., third-generation owner of Craggy Range, "You might find aromas of tomato leaves and bell peppers in this wine. Some people will love it and some will hate it, but our style is to actively incorporate high-quality notes."

Indeed, there is certainly a hint of plant leaves in the depths of the aroma . However, it is not at all unpleasant, and in fact, when combined with the fruitiness, the aroma and flavor seem to become more three-dimensional .

I think it's these complex elements that have been appreciated by the wine professionals who have the voting rights at Wine Spectator.

As for the construction...

Harvested both mechanically and by hand . 8% whole-cluster pressing , 92% destemming . Fermentation is done using a combination of wild and cultured yeast. Also, stainless steel tanks and French oak are used . Aged for 3 months . Fined and filtered.

By the way, this wine is also known as the wine served at the wedding reception of former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

And here are some pairing tips:

  • Shrimp, scallop and arugula salad
  • Asparagus and boiled egg salad
  • Steamed oysters with salsa sauce
  • Roast chicken in lemon sauce

It pairs well with this dish!

About the Craggy Range Winery

Craggy Range is a family-run winery established in Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand in 1998. In 1993, founder Terry Peabody and his wife Mary decided to create a family legacy that could be passed on to the next generation.

Notably, the Peabodys were determined to start with greenfield land rather than purchasing existing vineyards. After exploring France, the United States and Australia, they were ultimately seduced by the potential of New Zealand, where the region's mild climate, rich agricultural history and pioneering people perfectly matched their ideals.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the majestic Te Mata Peak, Craggy Range produces premium wines from grapes harvested in two iconic wine-growing regions: Hawke's Bay and Martinborough, showcasing the unique character of each site.

The special Gimlet Gravels plot in Hawke's Bay takes advantage of the warm stony soil to produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay, while the cool Te Muna Road plot in Martinborough produces Pinot Noir on old clay soil and Sauvignon Blanc on limestone and gravel soil.

The winery's core facility is located in the heart of Gimlet Gravels, with individual cellars designed to suit each wine, particularly Giants Winery, which uses French oak barrels to create the complex and special wine Sofia.

The quality and uniqueness of their wines has earned them high praise, with them being ranked number one in The Real Review's "Top New Zealand Wineries 2023" and in 2014 being named "New World Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

In addition to wine, the resort's restaurants and accommodations are also popular, offering visitors a luxurious and comfortable experience with seasonal menus using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The "Children's Christmas" project, established in 2018, also provides Christmas presents to underprivileged children in Hawke's Bay.

Furthermore, we are committed to sustainable winemaking and are aiming to convert all of our vineyards to organic farming. We place importance on coexistence with the natural environment, protecting microorganisms and biodiversity, while continuing our efforts to produce high-quality wines.

The Peabody family established a 1000-year trust to ensure the winery would never be sold and would remain in the family's hands. This long-term approach, combined with a strong commitment to economic, social and environmental sustainability, has firmly established Craggy Range as a key winery showcasing the potential of New Zealand wine to the world.

About the Wairarapa region

Wairarapa is located in the southeastern part of New Zealand's North Island, and is a popular resort area with easy access, just about an hour's drive from the capital, Wellington.

The Martinborough subregion in this region has climate and soil conditions very similar to those of Burgundy in France, and is known as one of the world's top producers of Pinot Noir.
