Smooth medium Pinot Noir
New Zealand Pinot Noir is definitely delicious, but a bit pricey.
If you feel that way, then this is the wine for you.
Great balance for a Pinot Noir at this price.
The aroma is raspberry , and the taste has elements of bright berries and dark fruits such as blackberries , with a hint of cocoa in the background.
No element is overpowered, and the overall result is a smooth, slightly light finish.
This type of "gentle, well-rounded Pinot" pairs perfectly with tomato sauce.
For example, it goes well with chicken and mushroom pasta in tomato sauce (short cooking time) and lasagna.
It also goes well with Japanese cuisine, such as Chikuzenni and braised pork, which use mirin and soy sauce.
It also goes well with red meat fish such as tuna and bonito.
As the name suggests, Coopers Creek Hawke's Bay Pinot Noir is sourced in Hawke's Bay on the North Island.
The three major Pinot Noir producing regions in New Zealand are Marlborough, Central Otago and Martinborough (Wairarapa).
This wine is produced in Hawke's Bay, a warm region that is best suited to full-bodied grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet.
However, this is merely a generalization. Within a single region, there are many smaller districts with different characteristics.
The grapes for Coopers Creek Hawke's Bay Pinot Noir are grown in Maraekaho, located inland in Hawke's Bay.
The Ruahine Range is to the west, and the winds blowing down from there keep the area relatively cool, with a large difference in temperature between day and night. This makes the area ideal for Pinot Noir, a cool-climate variety, even in the generally warm Hawke's Bay region.
In fact, Maraekakaho is the base of the Japanese-owned Osawa Wines, a winery known for producing high-quality Pinot Noir despite being located in Hawke's Bay.
So Maraekakaho is a small Pinot Noir region in Hawke's Bay, a deep red wine region.
For some reason, the Hawke's Bay Pinot Noir has disappeared from Cooper's Creek's website in the country, so it is possible that distribution to Japan may stop in the future.
Before that, be sure to try this soft and well-balanced Pinot.
About the Winery "Cooper's Creek"
Cooper's Creek is a family-run winery founded in New Zealand in 1980. It is located in the Huapai and Kumeu region, about 25 minutes drive northwest of Auckland.
The founders, Andrew and Cynthia Hendry, are husband and wife couple who aim to produce the highest quality wines in New Zealand's cool climate. Andrew's experience in the wine industry and Cynthia's success as a self-employed person were the keys to the success of the winery.
They began by planting Chardonnay and Merlot on four hectares of land, producing their first vintage in 1982, which was soon shipped to the local market.
During the 1980s the winery grew steadily and acquired a second vineyard in Hawke's Bay.
At the same time, they are building vineyard relationships with the country's major wine regions to expand their wine portfolio. They have always made it a priority to source from the best growing regions, and this is reflected in the wines they produce.
In the 1990s, the winery gained a reputation as a small winery offering high quality wines, and, thanks to success at numerous wine shows, was recognized as one of the best small and medium-sized wineries of the decade.
We also actively seek out partnerships with overseas markets. These efforts bore fruit, and in 1997 we received a special commendation from the New Zealand government.
Their multi-award winning Albariño in particular has become emblematic of their innovative spirit.
In 2022, Coopers Creek merged with the Joyce family, who founded Toitoi Wines, to become part of the Marlborough Wine Group. The group's winemaker, Ant MacKenzie, manages winemaking, preserving the quality, style and tradition on which Coopers Creek has built its reputation.
It remains a family-run business today, and while cherishing the principles it established at the time of its founding, it continues to grow as one of the most popular wineries.
Its wines are sold worldwide and available in locations from London to Los Angeles, Toronto to Tokyo.
About Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay is located in the eastern part of the North Island and is characterized by abundant sunshine and a relatively warm climate, and boasts the second largest grape-growing area in Australia.
Hawke's Bay specializes in producing red wines, particularly those made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, while fruity Chardonnay is a popular white wine.
The Gimlet Gravels, an area created when what was originally a riverbed was pushed up by an earthquake, is one of Hawke's Bay's important sub-regions.
