French Style Sauvignon Blanc

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is said to be best known for its intense fruitiness.

The tartness of grapefruit, the richness of passion fruit, and the refreshing taste of dried herbs.

The moment it is poured into a glass, these powerful aromas rise up in a harmonious blend, captivating us.

There are many wines like that.

But that's not all.

Sauvignon Blanc with the characteristics I have just described is sometimes called a "fruit bomb."

This is not meant as a compliment, but rather is often used as a derogatory expression for something being too fruity.

Some people believe that wine should have less of a fruity taste and more of a non-fruitful taste.

Even in New Zealand, a country famous for its fruity wines, some producers think this way and choose not to emphasize the fruitiness too much.

I believe that the most prominent example of this is Clos Henri, which I will introduce today.

Clos Henri is, so to speak, an offshoot of the prestigious Henri Bourgeois family of Sancerre in the Loire region of France.

They realized that New Zealand was the only place outside of France where they could pursue their own unique style, so they planted the same Sauvignon Blanc vines as the original.

They have been making French-style wines in Marlborough for over 20 years.

Until now, the two main series were "Petit Clos (second line)" and "Clos Henri (flagship)."

However, starting this year, the series structure has undergone a complete change.

The relatively affordable entry-level model is the "Estate," while the higher-end cuvées are named after the ancient Ice Age, such as "Waimaunga" and "Otira."

The label has also been redesigned, giving it a very bright and modern look.

Well, when you first put this Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc in your mouth, you will feel a beautiful lemon-like acidity. There are also hints of kumquat and quince. However, the fruit flavor is gentle and the impression is dry.

Its greatest characteristic is the bitter and mineral taste that lingers in the mouth. Along with the pleasant bitterness reminiscent of the white pulp of citrus fruits, you can also clearly feel the lingering, scratchy aftertaste that leaves the upper palate feeling dry.

This is a characteristic not found in typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

I think that those who are accustomed to drinking hard water mineral water (such as France's Contrex or Vittel) will find this ``hard'' taste irresistible.

This type of mineral wine tastes even better when paired with food.

It goes well with shellfish such as oysters and clams, and also with grilled salted white fish and grilled chicken. I think that sprinkling herbs on top of either dish will make them even better match.

This is a bottle I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a dry white wine that is not too fruity and goes well with food.

I think you will be surprised to find out that there are New Zealand wines like this!

About the Winery "Clos Henri"

Clos Henri logo

Clos Henri is a winery owned by the Henri Bourgeois family, famous wine producers in Sancerre, Loire Valley, France.

Of all the places around the world, the Bourgeois family chose Marlborough, a wine-producing region in New Zealand, to create the wine of their dreams.

The wines they aim to produce in Marlborough are French-style, different from those produced by other New Zealand producers, producing textured, elegant wines that impress Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir fans around the world.

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, is produced in overwhelming quantities and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In addition, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular among red wines.
