Concentrated Pinot from the Oldest Vineyard

There's a vineyard that was the first to be cultivated in the rolling hills of Waipara.
Located about 50 minutes' drive from Christchurch, the "Netherwood" district, stretching 5km north of the restaurant on Lees Road, is that very place.
Grapes were first planted in Netherwood in 1986 by Daniel Schuster, known as a Waipara pioneer, along with Russell Black, founder of Black Estate.
This period in 1986 was the same time that the prestigious Canterbury winery Pegasus Bay also planted its grapes. Since then, Black Estate and Pegasus Bay have strived together, contributing to the growth of Waipara wines. It's no exaggeration to say that these two wineries embody the history of Waipara wine.
Incidentally, the current owner of Black Estate lives in Netherwood and also has a winery and a private tasting room next to the vineyard.
Cultivation and Winemaking
The soil consists of ancient sedimentary rocks known as "Waipara Greensand." This stratum, made up of sandstone, mudstone, and a small amount of clay, is said to have formed at the same time as the sandstones in Champagne and Kent.
Since planting, the Netherwood vineyard has never been irrigated. The roots reach deep into the earth in search of water. As a result, yields are extremely low, and each grape is packed with concentrated fruit flavor.
The vineyard is BioGro certified and managed using biodynamic farming methods under Demeter certification.
Winemaking is kept as simple and natural as possible, with minimal human intervention.
Grapes are hand-picked, fermented with only wild yeasts, and no fining or filtration is performed. The inherent character of the fruit and soil is directly reflected in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red. It appears slightly cloudy rather than sharply clear.
When poured into a glass, red fruits like pomegranate and plum emerge. Underlying notes of refreshing cedar and bitter licorice. It's a complex aroma with a hint of tranquility.
On the palate, it's clear that this wine is not chasing "fruitiness." The main characters are not the fruit flavors but rather the complex elements of herbs and spices, with a gentle fruitiness of berries and cherries supporting them from behind.
The acidity is firm and consistent from start to finish. The tannins are fine and powerful. The finish, accompanied by spicy notes, is very long.
This is a style of "complex Pinot" that is completely different from the typical bright New Zealand Pinot.
Decanting / Aging
If enjoying now, decanting is recommended. Allowing it to breathe for about 30 minutes will open up its closed aromas and smooth out the flavor.
Its true value will emerge in 5 to 10 years, or even later. As the complex elements develop and eventually harmonize, it will likely acquire an ineffable aged aroma reminiscent of truffles, forest undergrowth, and fallen leaves.
It's a wine worth having in your cellar for special occasions. It also makes an excellent gift for loved ones who appreciate wine, especially Pinot Noir.
Pairing
Its elegant structure and complex aromas pair well with rich, umami-laden dishes.
- Beef fillet steak (simple salt and pepper to highlight the meat's umami)
- Beef stew (the deep sauce complements the wine's complexity)
- Braised chicken on the bone with mushrooms in tomato sauce (the deeply simmered umami creates a superb match)
- Sukiyaki (the savory-sweet umami of soy sauce and sugar enhances the Pinot Noir's fruitiness)
Enjoyable Comparisons
Incidentally, Black Estate has two other wines that you might want to compare with Netherwood's character.
"Home," known for its harmony and approachability, and "Damsteep," with its concentrated intensity from a steep slope. Comparing these three bottles will reveal the depth of the Waipara region.
Furthermore, we highly recommend comparing it with the Pinot Noir from Pegasus Bay, another prestigious Canterbury winery in the same Waipara region, also planted in 1986.
Pegasus Bay's Pinot has generous fruit flavors and rich notes from 30% new oak. Even from the same region and vines of the same age, the wines are distinctly different. This will surely reveal the profound depth of the Waipara region.
About the Winery: Black Estate

Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island . It is situated about an hour's drive from Christchurch, boasting beautiful vineyard landscapes.
"Natural" Viticulture, Cherishing the Land
The most distinctive feature of this winery is its strict adherence to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize the power of nature . They use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides whatsoever. Instead, they care for the vineyards as a living entity, for example, by grazing their own cattle and local sheep in the fields to eat weeds, and using their manure as natural fertilizer . Another of their commitments is to carry out agricultural work in tune with celestial rhythms, such as the phases of the moon .
Three Unique Vineyards
Black Estate has three vineyards, each with a distinct character .
-
Home: The winery's base, where clay soil produces robust grapes .
-
Damsteep: As the name suggests, it's on a steep slope, and the limestone-rich soil imparts unique flavors to the wine .
-
Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Without artificial irrigation, the vines root deep into the earth independently, producing concentrated flavors .
"Hands-Off" Winemaking

Winemaker Nicholas Brown was named New Zealand's Winemaker of the Year in 2022 . His philosophy is to "interfere as little as possible." He uses no artificial yeasts, fermenting solely with the natural yeasts found in the vineyard. Furthermore, he avoids filtration to clarify the wine, so the pure, energetic flavors of the grapes are bottled as they are .
The Joy of Visiting the Winery
On the premises, there is a famous restaurant that has annually received the highest rating of "two stars" from a prestigious local guide . Here, you can enjoy dishes made with fresh organic ingredients from their own vineyards and local farms, paired with their proud wines . They also offer a unique experience of having a B&B within the vineyard, allowing you to enjoy the quiet vineyard alone after the staff have gone home .
Black Estate is not just a place for making wine; it's a passionate winery where you can fully experience the region's nature and food culture.
About the Region: Canterbury/Waipara
"Canterbury/Waipara" is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, characterized by a cool, dry climate.
North Canterbury, with New Zealand's largest plains, is also one of the world's leading lamb-producing regions. Wineries scattered throughout offer a diverse range of grape varietals.
Waipara, accessible for a day trip from Christchurch, produces premium wines such as Riesling and Pinot Noir and is a popular tourist destination.
