Damsteep Pinot: Richness & Elegance

About an hour's drive from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island lies the Waipara Valley, home to a collection of small yet distinctive wineries. Among them, the "Damsteep Vineyard," where the grapes for this wine are grown, is situated on a steep, northeast-facing slope.

The vineyard is located at an altitude of 140-180m, with a northeast-facing slope that receives ample sunlight. It features clay soils overlying limestone and sandstone, ensuring excellent drainage.

The unique characteristics of this terroir impart a "power and structure" to Damsteep wines that sets them apart from other Black Estate Pinot Noirs.

The Pinot Noir vines, planted in 1999, are BioGro certified. They are organically and biodynamically farmed, planted at a high density of 5,000 vines/ha, and are dry-farmed on their own roots.

The grapes, thriving in a challenging environment, develop deep roots, allowing for a consistently concentrated harvest each year.

Winemaking

Harvested grapes are fermented using only indigenous yeasts. No additives such as chaptalization or acidification are used.

After fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately 12 months in old French oak barrels. It is neither fined nor filtered, with only minimal SO2 added at bottling.

This hands-off winemaking approach allows the unique character of the Damsteep vineyard to shine through.

Tasting Notes

The color is a slightly deep ruby red, with a noticeable degree of cloudiness.

The aroma is more expressive after a little air exposure than when first poured. Black fruit notes of blueberry and plum emerge, followed by complex nuances of licorice and dried herbs in the background.

On the palate, there's a well-concentrated fruit flavor.

The tannins are fine-grained but present. While fruit elements are evident, earthy and herbaceous notes are quite prominent. The finish is long and persistent, with strong retro-nasal aromas.

Decanting would further enhance the aromatic complexity. Alternatively, if not decanted, the aromas should evolve and be enjoyable for 2-3 days after opening.

Aging Potential

This wine is enjoyable now, but it truly excels with 5+ years of aging.

I've personally tasted it after more than 10 years, and the various components of the wine—fruit, tannins, acidity, and minerality—had beautifully integrated, developing a complex and profound flavor.

Yet, its lively vitality remained undiminished, a clear testament to the high potential of this vineyard.

Pairing Suggestions

Its robust tannins and concentrated fruit flavors beautifully complement meat dishes. Think beef braised in red wine, pan-seared lamb, or smoked duck.

It pairs particularly well with rich, fatty dishes, enhancing the dining experience.

  • Beef Shin Braised in Red Wine: The concentrated fruit flavor and the rich umami of slow-cooked meat meld perfectly.
  • Herb-Crusted Lamb Chops: The distinctive flavor of lamb and the dried herb aromas naturally harmonize.
  • Braised Pork Belly (Kakuni): The sweet and savory soy-based sauce and the tannins create an exquisite balance.
  • Genghis Khan (Lamb Barbecue): The savory aroma of lamb and the dark fruit notes complement each other.

Among Black Estate's Pinot Noirs, Damsteep offers the most powerful concentration and structure.

With the appealing harmony of "Home," the extreme complexity of "Netherwood," and the concentrated "Damsteep," comparing their individual characteristics would be a delightful experience!

About the Winery: Black Estate

Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in North Canterbury, on New Zealand's South Island. It is about an hour's drive from Christchurch, surrounded by beautiful vineyard landscapes.

"Natural" Viticulture that Cares for the Land

The winery's most distinctive feature is its thorough commitment to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize nature's power. They use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, they care for their vineyards as living ecosystems, for example, by grazing their own cattle and neighboring sheep to eat weeds and use their manure as natural fertilizer. They also adhere to the rhythms of celestial bodies, such as the moon phases, for their farming practices.

Three Unique Vineyards

Black Estate boasts three vineyards, each with its own distinct character:

  • Home: The winery's base, where clay soils yield robust grapes.

  • Damsteep: As the name suggests, it's on a steep slope, where limestone-rich soil imparts a distinctive flavor to the wine.

  • Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Here, vines are not artificially irrigated, forcing them to root deep into the earth, resulting in concentrated flavors.

"Hands-Off" Winemaking

Head winemaker Nicholas Brown was named New Zealand's top winemaker in 2022. His philosophy is to intervene as little as possible. They don't use artificial yeasts, relying solely on natural yeasts from the vineyard for fermentation. Additionally, they avoid filtration to clarify the wine, ensuring that the pure, energetic flavors of the grapes are bottled untouched.

Enjoying a Visit to the Winery

On the estate, there is a renowned restaurant that annually receives a top "2-star" rating from a local authoritative guide. Here, guests can enjoy dishes made with fresh, organic ingredients from their own vineyards and local farms, paired with their exquisite wines. Additionally, a B&B nestled within the vineyards offers a special experience where guests can have the tranquil vineyard to themselves after the staff has left for the night.

Black Estate is not just a place to make wine, but a passionate winery where you can experience the natural environment and food culture of the region.
