Soft, Delicate, Beautiful Pinot

About 50 minutes by car from Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island, lies Black Estate's "Home Block" vineyard, nestled in the hills of Waipara Valley. This is the very origin of Black Estate, the first vineyard cultivated by founder Russell Black.

Incidentally, Russell Black has since retired, and the current winemaker is Nicholas Brown. That's right, Brown is making Black! (Laughs)

The Home Block vineyard, managed by Mr. Brown, is a gentle, north-facing slope with calcareous clay soil. This well-drained, mineral-rich land cultivates supple and aromatic Pinot Noir.

The vineyard consists of two blocks: the bottom block with vines over 30 years old, and the top block with vines around 15 years old, planted at high density. Neither block is irrigated, and all vines are on their own rootstock. Under BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic farming methods, the grapes quietly build their strength.

Winemaking Process

No additives such as chaptalization or acidification are used. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts only, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. Only a minimal amount of SO2 is added at bottling.

"Capturing the essence of this land in a bottle." Black Estate's winemaking philosophy is most honestly expressed in this Home wine.

Tasting Notes

The color is a slightly bright ruby red. It appears a little cloudy.

The aroma is dominated by bright red fruit notes such as raspberry, American cherry, and pomegranate. These are layered with nuances of dried herbs, creating a delicate and complex aromatic profile.

On the palate, it is soft and supple. The tannins are fine-grained and not overpowering. Yet, the lingering finish that subtly spreads after swallowing has a distinct presence.

This wine perfectly embodies beauty over weight, and delicacy over power.

Aging

It can be enjoyed now, and its charm will be fully appreciated. However, with 3 to 5 years of aging, the fruit, acidity, and tannins will integrate further, transforming into an even smoother and more complex flavor.

It is also recommended to lay it down for a special occasion.

Pairing Suggestions

Its bright fruit aroma and delicate tannins complement a wide range of dishes, such as roasted chicken or pork, mushroom risotto, and grilled tuna.

Its versatility, adapting to various cuisines, is also one of its charms.

  • Herb-Roasted Chicken Thighs: The vibrant fruit aromas and herbal notes harmonize naturally.
  • Pan-Seared Pork Tenderloin: The delicate tannins gently embrace the tender umami of the pork.
  • Mushroom Risotto: The earthy notes of mushrooms resonate with the dried herb aromas.
  • Tuna Steak (with Soy Sauce): The richness of the red meat and the red fruit aroma are surprisingly good together.

Among Black Estate's Pinots, "Home" is the most approachable, yet it encapsulates the winery's philosophy.

By comparing it with the concentrated power of "Damsteep" and the extremely complex "Netherwood," you will gain a deeper appreciation for the unique character of each vineyard, all born from the same producer and philosophy.

About the Winery "Black Estate"

Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is situated about an hour's drive from Christchurch, surrounded by beautiful vineyard landscapes.

"Natural" Viticulture that Cares for the Land

The winery's most distinctive feature is its thorough commitment to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize the power of nature. They use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, they care for the vineyard as a living organism, allowing their own cattle and neighboring sheep to graze in the fields to control weeds, and using their manure as natural fertilizer. Furthermore, aligning farm work with the rhythms of the celestial bodies, such as the phases of the moon, is another aspect of their dedication. .

Three Unique Vineyards

Black Estate has three vineyards, each with its own distinct character. .

  • Home: The heart of the winery, where powerful grapes grow from clayey soil. .

  • Damsteep: As its name suggests, it's on a steep slope, and the limestone-rich soil gives the wine a unique flavor. .

  • Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Without artificial irrigation, the vines are forced to root deep into the soil, resulting in concentrated flavors. .

"Hands-Off" Winemaking

Winemaker Nicholas Brown was named New Zealand's top winemaker in 2022. His philosophy is to "intervene as little as possible." He doesn't use artificial yeasts, relying solely on natural yeasts found in the vineyard for fermentation. He also avoids filtration to clarify the wine, ensuring that the pure, vibrant flavors of the grapes are bottled as they are. .

The Joy of Visiting the Winery

On the premises, there is a renowned restaurant that annually receives the highest "Two Stars" rating in local authoritative guides. Here, guests can enjoy dishes made with fresh, organic ingredients from their own vineyard and local farms, paired with their proud wines. They also offer a special experience: a B&B located within the vineyard, allowing guests to have the quiet night-time vineyard all to themselves after the staff have gone home. .

Black Estate is not just a place where wine is made; it is a passionate winery where you can experience the land's nature and food culture as a whole.

About Marlborough, the Region of Origin

Marlborough is the central wine region of New Zealand.

It boasts favorable natural conditions for grape growing, including abundant sunshine and significant diurnal temperature variation. Over 80% of NZ's wine is produced in Marlborough.

Among these, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, accounts for an overwhelming proportion of production and is widely loved worldwide for its unique character. For red wines, Pinot Noir, with its charming rich berry fruit flavors, is popular.
