Soft, Delicate, Beautiful Pinot

Approximately 50 minutes by car from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, Black Estate's "Home Vineyard" spreads across the hills of Waipara Valley. This is where founder Russell Black first started, truly their origin.

Incidentally, Mr. Black has since retired, and the current winemaker is Nicholas Brown. That's right, Brown makes Black! (Laughs)

Now, this Home Vineyard, managed by Mr. Brown, is a gently sloping, north-facing site. The soil is clay-based with limestone. This well-drained, mineral-rich land cultivates supple and aromatic Pinot Noir.

The vineyard consists of two blocks: the bottom block with vines over 30 years old, and the top block with high-density planting and vines around 15 years old. Both are unirrigated and all vines are on their own rootstock. Under BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic farming, the grapes quietly accumulate their strength.

Winemaking

No additives such as chaptalization or acidification are used. Fermentation occurs with wild yeasts only, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. Only a minimal amount of SO2 is added at bottling.

"Bottling what the land inherently possesses, as is." Black Estate's winemaking philosophy is most honestly expressed in this "Home" wine.

Tasting Notes

The color is a slightly bright ruby red. It appears a little cloudy.

The aroma is dominated by the vibrant red fruit aromas of raspberry, American cherry, and pomegranate. Nuances of dried herbs layer over these, creating a delicate and complex aromatic profile.

On the palate, it is soft and supple. The tannins are fine-grained and not overpowering. Yet, the lingering finish that subtly spreads after swallowing has a distinct presence.

This is a wine best described by words like beauty over weight, and delicacy over power.

Aging

Its charm is fully evident when opened now. However, with 3-5 years of aging, the fruit, acidity, and tannins will integrate further, evolving into an even smoother and more complex flavor.

It's also recommended to let it rest a little for a special occasion.

Pairing Suggestions

The vibrant fruit aroma and delicate tannins complement a wide range of dishes, such as roasted chicken or pork, mushroom risotto, and grilled tuna.

One of this wine's charms is its versatility with food.

  • Herb-roasted chicken thigh: The vibrant fruit aroma and herbal notes harmonize naturally.
  • Pan-seared pork fillet: Delicate tannins gently envelop the tender umami of the pork.
  • Mushroom risotto: The earthy notes of mushrooms resonate with the dried herb aroma.
  • Tuna steak (soy sauce flavor): The umami of red meat and the red fruit aroma surprisingly pair very well.

Among Black Estate's Pinots, "Home" is the most approachable, yet it encapsulates the winery's philosophy.

By comparing it with the concentrated power of "Damsteep" and the extremely complex "Netherwood," you can gain a deeper appreciation for the distinct character of each vineyard, all born from the same producer and philosophy.

About the Winery "Black Estate"

Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is about an hour's drive from Christchurch, with beautiful vineyard scenery.

"Natural" Viticulture that Cherishes the Land

The most distinctive feature of this winery is its thorough adherence to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize the power of nature. They use absolutely no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, they care for the vineyard as a living organism, for example, by grazing their own cows and neighboring sheep to eat weeds and using their manure as natural fertilizer. Furthermore, performing agricultural work according to the rhythms of celestial bodies, such as the phases of the moon, is another one of their commitments. .

Three Unique Vineyards

Black Estate has three vineyards, each with its own distinct character. .

  • Home: The heart of the winery, where powerful grapes grow from clay soil. .

  • Damsteep: As the name suggests, it is on a steep slope, and the limestone-rich soil imparts a unique flavor to the wine. .

  • Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Without artificial irrigation, the vines naturally root deep into the ground, creating a concentrated flavor. .

"Hands-Off" Winemaking

Winemaker Nicholas Brown was named New Zealand's Winemaker of the Year in 2022. His philosophy is to "do as little as possible." He doesn't use artificial yeasts; fermentation occurs solely with the wild yeasts present in the vineyard. Furthermore, he avoids filtration to clarify the wine, so the pure, energetic flavors of the grapes are bottled as they are. .

The Joy of Visiting the Winery

On the premises, there is a famous restaurant that consistently receives the highest "2-star" rating in a prestigious local guide. Here, you can enjoy dishes made with fresh organic ingredients from their own vineyard and local farms, paired with their acclaimed wines. They also offer a B&B within the vineyard, providing a special experience where you can have the peaceful night vineyard all to yourself after the staff have left. .

Black Estate is not merely a place for making wine; it is a passionate winery where you can experience the nature and food culture of the region as a whole.
