The Winter Olympics, which began in Beijing on February 4th, concluded on February 20th.

New Zealand has sent a total of 141 athletes to the 16 Winter Olympic Games up to the last tournament, and they have won a total of one silver and two bronze medals.

However, this year's tournament saw the team win two gold medals and one silver medal, making it the most successful Winter Olympics ever!

First Gold Medal

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott made history by winning New Zealand's first Winter Olympic gold medal in women's snowboard slopestyle.
It's unbelievable. I'm really happy to have won New Zealand's first Winter Olympic gold medal and I'm proud to be a Kiwi.
He commented.

Sadowski-Synnott also competed in the previous Olympics in 2018 Pyeongchang, where she won a bronze medal in big air, making this her second consecutive medal win.

He also won a silver medal in Big Air this time, making him the New Zealander with the most Winter Olympic medals ever, with three medals in total.

Participating as brother

The second gold medal went to Nico Porteous in the men's freestyle halfpipe skiing event!

Like Sadowski-Synnott, Porteous won a bronze medal at the last Pyeongchang Olympics, making this her second consecutive medal.

Porteous, who defeated David Wise of the United States, who had won the Sochi and Pyeongchang Olympics for two consecutive years, is only 20 years old. He competed with his 22-year-old brother Miguel Porteous (11th in the freestyle skiing halfpipe).

Porteous, who was also given a piggyback ride by his brother Miguel,
My brother is my role model and best friend.
He also served as the flag bearer for the New Zealand team at the closing ceremony.

Contributing to the success of overseas players!

At this year's Winter Olympics, foreign athletes also spoke about New Zealand.
I spent the (Northern Hemisphere) summer in Cardrona in the Southern Hemisphere and ate meat pie every day for two months.

So said Eileen Gu, who won gold medals in the women's freestyle skiing big air and halfpipe, and a silver medal in the slopestyle. She is from the United States and has been competing as a representative of her mother's home country, China, since 2019.

The Cardrona Alpine Resort where Goo spent her time is a popular ski resort located between Queenstown and Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island. She loved the Kiwi meat pie so much that she had it for lunch every day.

When I heard it wasn't very healthy I thought, "Why?" Pie is so delicious, it's a wonderful food!

Isn't it something that everyone eats every day?

I got hooked!
"It's no exaggeration to say that meat pie is the national dish of Kiwis (New Zealanders).

Compared to meat pies found in Japan, these pies are packed with more filling and the firm dough acts as a container for the filling.

It is covered on top with a crispy dough and is quite heavy.

The standard fillings are minced meat, minced meat and cheese, steak and cheese, etc. They are sold everywhere in New Zealand, including bakeries, convenience stores, and supermarkets, and are so popular that an award is held every year to decide the best pie in the country.

The photo above shows the product that won the gold award in the minced meat and cheese category last year.

This is a post from Goo in 2019, spending time in Cardrona. He was so disappointed that he couldn't go to New Zealand last year because of COVID-19, so he made his own pie.

Also, it was New Zealand ski coach Brad Prosser, who trained Goo in New Zealand, who encouraged him to "give it a try," even though he had never competed in the half-pipe until two years ago.

The gold medal in halfpipe was entirely thanks to Brad.
