If you're planning a trip to New Zealand soon, you may have an unexpected task waiting for you when you return home! You will actually be weighed when you board the plane.
Of course they would weigh my luggage, but to have them weigh me too... Could they be checking if I have metabolic syndrome?
What is the purpose of weight measurement?
Air New Zealand will begin weighing passengers before boarding international flights at Auckland Airport between May 29 and July 2.
Air New Zealand load control expert Alastair James said on a national broadcaster.
"This is a bit of an unconventional request, but it's really important to know how much everything weighs on an airplane."
He commented,
A load controller is a person in charge of managing the cargo and fuel that is loaded onto an aircraft. The "load" in load controller does not mean a road, but rather means to load something.
The cargo does not only include goods, but also the passengers and crew who board the plane.
The goal is to collect data from 10,000 people
"We calculate the weight of passengers, crew and carry-on bags based on an average. We need this survey to determine that average."
said James.
The survey, which is conducted every five years, involves weighing at least 10,000 passengers and crew members to gather enough data to derive an average.
The survey method is quite simple.
When passengers check in, their baggage is weighed and they are also asked to step on a scale. Their weight is automatically recorded in a computer, and the weight is not revealed to them or shared with anyone around them, and of course the data is not made public.
Furthermore, this weighing is optional. Even if the airline asks you to cooperate, if you don't want to be weighed, you can skip it.
7th Award
We also received some good news when Air New Zealand was named "Airline of the Year," marking the seventh time in the last ten years that they have won the award.
According to AirlineRatings.com, Air Canada was rated the best airline for its recently announced Skynest triple bunk beds in economy class, as well as its environmental initiatives, operational safety policies and the quality of its staff.
By the way, ANA was ranked 14th and JAL was ranked 19th.
The Skynest is expected to cost $400 for four hours. A flight to Japan takes about 10 hours. That means you can lie down completely for those four hours, but is that expensive or cheap? What do you think?
The longest flight operated by Air New Zealand is from New York to Auckland, which takes about 18 hours, so being able to lie down for even just four hours on this flight may be a big plus.
The Skynest is scheduled to begin operation in 2024.
